3) WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 2.0?
a) Proxy Server Support
More companies and individuals are using Proxy Servers as a means to improve internet performance or to filter the data available on the internet. Web Buddy 2.0 adds support for these Proxy Servers.
Generally, there will be a URL which defines the location of the Proxy Server. For Web Buddy to work with Proxy Servers, simply enter the Proxy URL in the "General" tab in the Web Buddy Preferences. If your proxy server requires a port number, place it at the end of the proxy server address (a port number of 8000 would appear as http://proxy.dataviz.com:8000).
b) Password Protected Sites
There are two types of Password Protected Sites. One type uses HTTP Authentication to gain access to a web site. You will know if the site is using HTTP Authentication because when you try to bring up the site, a dialog will appear asking you for specific password information. The other type of Password Protected Site asks for a password via a web form. Therefore, you would actually enter your information into a web page rather than a dialog box.
Web Buddy supports both types of Password Protected Sites, but there are some special considerations. Please see the Web Buddy Help file for important information concerning Password Protected Sites.
c) Content Filtering
Web Buddy 2.0 adds the ability to filter out certain types of files while downloading. For example, a site may contain a great deal of multimedia files, such as sounds or movies, which are generally large and therefore take extra time to download. With Web Buddy 2.0, you can choose not to download these files while taking information "To Go".
d) Stay in Directory Feature
Web Buddy 2.0 adds a Stay in Directory feature which allows you to download a portion of a site without getting anything that is not in the same directory as the page where the download started. For example, let's say you are in the Web Buddy section of the DataViz site which is located in the directory /www.dataviz.com/products/webbuddy. The Stay in Directory feature would only take pages in that specific directory. If there were links to other directories, say the DataViz home page (or /www.dataviz.com), those linked pages would not be brought down during a download.
e) Recreating Directory Tree
Version 2.0 of Web Buddy adds the ability to download a site while keeping the original directory structure of the web site. Previous versions of Web Buddy would download all files from a site into one folder. The new feature to recreate a directory tree is useful for things such as backing up web sites using Web Buddy.
f) Roadblock on Live Links
This new feature in Web Buddy 2.0 prevents users from following "live" links on a downloaded page or site. A live link is one that when clicked on will go "live" to the internet. This can happen when the link is on a page at the deepest level specified by the user prior to the download or the link goes to a page on another site.
This feature is especially useful when you wish to browse offline but do not want to initiate a connection to the internet.
g) Updated HTML Translator
The HTML translator included with Web Buddy 2.0 has been enhanced with better support for tables, graphics and extended character sets.
4) INSTALLING VERSION 2.0 OVER 1.x
If you are installing 2.0 over version 1.x of Web Buddy, you will be able to view all of your downloaded pages and sites normally. In addition, you will still retain all the bookmarks created with Web Buddy 1.x.
Please note: Any pages or sites downloaded with Web Buddy 2.0 will not work properly with version 1.x of Web Buddy. Therefore, if you wish to revert back to Web Buddy 1.x from 2.0, you will not be able to view pages or sites that were downloaded with Web Buddy 2.0.
5) WHERE'S THE MANUAL?
As Web Buddy is an online product, we have provided the manual in an online form. We purposely set up the HELP system in Web Buddy to be very similar to a traditional user manual. It is easily accessible by clicking on the help symbol (question mark) from the Web Buddy toolbar and Web Buddy Central program. You can also get to it by double-clicking on "Web Buddy Help" file in the Web Buddy application folder. Be sure to check out the "Getting Started" and "Suggested Uses" sections if you are new to Web Buddy. You may also want to check out the Web Buddy web site for tips and updates to the documentation at (http://www.dataviz.com/webbuddy)
6) FEEDBACK
We'd love to hear what you think (both good and bad!) To report problems or give feedback, please fill out the form live on the Web at http://www.dataviz.com/forms/db/wbfbmac.html (THIS IS BOOKMARKED IN THE 'DATAVIZ' CATEGORY IN WEB BUDDY CENTRAL'S BOOKMARK MANAGER)
7) Technical Notes and Tips
The following features have not yet been implemented in this version of Web Buddy.
v2.0
- Java Applets that require a live connection to the web are NOT supported and will usually show up in your browser as grayed-out boxes. Most applets that include all necessary code to run locally will function correctly when viewed locally.
- Image Maps - "server-side" image maps are NOT supported in this version. If you see x.y coordinates at the bottom of your browser window when you move your cursor over an image map you know it's a server-side image map. In previous versions of Web Buddy, downloads would take the graphic, but it would not be linked to anything. In this version, the graphic will be linked to a special page telling the user why it did not download. "Client-side" image maps ARE SUPPORTED. If you see entire URL's at the bottom of your browser window when you move your cursor over an image map, you know it's a client-side image map. An example of a client-side image map can be found at the DataViz Home Page (bookmarked in Web Buddy 2.0).
Known issues:
- If you are using SAM Anti-Virus, and you do downloads into an area marked as a "SafeZone", you may get "suspicious activity" warnings from SAM during the downloads.
- You may experience a crash when entering a schedule with a URL over 256 characters long.
- Trying to convert URLs over 256 characters in length will not work.
- Converting plain text pages (non-HTML) will not work. They will be treated as HTML pages and the results may be unpredictable.
- Taking local pages (i.e. pages that do not have an "http" reference) To Go is currently not functioning.
